Christian Worship Artist

Lance Michaels was born in Winona, Minnesota and moved to Rice Lake, Wisconsin when he was five years old. He’s been playing the guitar since he was twelve years old, and he is now a singer/songwriter in the Christian Rock Band, Against the Flow. The Band has released three CD’s and is now awaiting the release of their fourth CD, coming soon! Check it out!

Michelle: Lance Michaels, good to have you with us. How are ya, buddy?

Lance: I’m doing GREAT Michelle!

Michelle: Lance, you are an incredibly, talented Worship Artist. When did you know you were called to be a writer and performer?

Lance: Thank you, Michelle. I’ve been playing the guitar since I was twelve, but when I got married and had kids I had other things that kept me from playing much. When I gave my life to the Lord it was like I had a reason to pick it up and start playing it again. God gave me the words, the music and the songs just started pouring out! As my walk grew with Him, so did the depth of my music. I’ve written songs now that I never would have dreamed of writing ten years ago and it’s all because of the passion that Jesus has put in my heart.

Michelle: Tell us how you came to be a Christian.

Lance: To make a long story short, I went through some hard times and I had really gotten down about some things in life. I was raised a Christian, but I had never REALLY given my heart to the Lord. I had a Christian friend who just said the right thing at the right time and it really got me thinking! He asked “if I were to die today, was I CERTAIN that I would go to heaven!?” I couldn’t answer him! Not long after that it became so clear to me that I needed to start living for Jesus and dying to myself. That was ten years ago and I haven’t looked back! To be honest, I never really knew much about Christian music before this and I was so excited to find there was some great music out there that was uplifting, inspirational and that honored the Lord. Christian music opened up a whole new world to me and I just want to bring others closer to the Lord through my music.

Michelle: How do you personally define worship?

Lance: Anything that brings me closer to the Lord and brings Him glory.

Michelle: What is the religious and conceptual backbone of your band “Against the Flow?”

Lance: The name “Against the Flow” refers to us as Christians going against the flow of society. We are to be “in the world, but not of it.” The cover to my first CD was a bunch of fish swimming in one direction and a single fish going against the flow of what all the others were. I got the idea from Romans 12:2 “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Michelle: What is the title of the band’s first CD and the first song you wrote. What was the inspiration behind it?

Lance: The first CD is Against the Flow like the band. My very first song I wrote at eighteen and it was called “Best friends.” I played it in front of my graduation class. The first song I wrote for the first CD was called “Make me whole.” It was just about how God had taken this half of a man I had been and made me whole in Him!

Michelle: What is your favorite song on the new record?

Lance: I think my favorite is “The road home.” That’s the name of the album too and I think it’s one of the best pieces of music I’ve ever done! It’s very catchy and I love the lyrical content. It’s all about what a true walk in Christ is all about and how we are to be on the narrow road that the Bible actually says only a few find!

Michelle: What is your mission through Music?

Lance: To bring others to Christ, to encourage and uplift people, to entertain others in a Godly way that makes them feel good when they hear my music and to bring glory to Jesus! I find that music is a vessel that can bring out more emotion and fill a person with so much more hope than most other things can. The thing I don’t like about a lot of music today is that it is so dark and you are left with a feeling of hopelessness afterwards. I just love to fill people with hope, peace, joy and leave them with a smile on their face and singing a happy, positive song the rest of the day!

Michelle: Do you ever feel pressured to fit into a mold, or has it been easy to stay true to who you are?

Lance: Actually, I did feel a little pressure on my last CD to not be as “in your face” about the Lord. It was good and there was nothing wrong with the songs, but I didn’t feel I wrote it to and for the Lord. For my new CD I went back to not worrying about what others might think or that maybe I would get more people to listen to it. I wrote it all for Jesus and I think it’s my best album yet!

Michelle: How do you spend your time when you’re not writing and in the studio?

Lance: I love my family and they are everything to me. I love spending time with them and I also love being outside in God’s beautiful creation.

Michelle: What advice would you give someone who wants to be a Worship Artist?

Lance: Make it ALL about JESUS!! My two passions are the Lord and music. When I put those two together it is a powerful combination! I would make sure that anyone you work with is on the same spiritual page as you are. If you are all doing it for the Lord and not trying to make things happen for yourself then He will bless it and you will in turn bless others!

Michelle: What’s next for Lance Michaels and Against the Flow?

Lance: We just finished our new CD and hope to have it back very soon. You can check out the new music at MySpace. I think it’s the best music we’ve done yet and I hope you enjoy it and it blesses you! I’m just waiting to see where God leads me next.
