Interview with Kane’d

Kane’d: Alternative-Rock-Pop Band

Jessica Gilbert: Kane’d, thanks so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to do an interview for TSM. It’s great to have you all in the magazine.

Kane’d: You’re very welcome. Thank you for having us.

Jessica Gilbert: What inspired you all to get into music? Was singing something you always wanted to do?

Kane’d:
Stacey: Yes, we always wanted to sing.
Steph: We’ve been singing since being very young. Singing runs in our family.
Cheryl: It was inevitable that we would rock the microphone eventually.

Jessica Gilbert: Tell us a little bit about your music background.

Kane’d:
Stacey: Us three girls have always sung together. Dad used to always get us up to sing in his shows. We started off singing cheesy pop when we were little, but we were brought up on the best of 80’s rock music.
Cheryl: When we hit our teens we decided that rock music was what we wanted to be doing, so we enlisted the guys to play the instruments. And that’s how we became the band we are now.

Jessica Gilbert: What’s your process for writing lyrics? And where do you get the inspiration for your songs?

Kane’d:
Steph: We don’t have a specific process. Every song happens differently. Sometimes the lyrics come before the music, or sometimes we will have a tune in our head and that starts us off.
Chez: We have done collaborations with other writers where we all sit down and jam it out until we get something great.
Stacey: There isn’t a magic formula it just kinda happens. It is handy to have a notepad at all times as lyrics tend to jump out at you when you least expect. It does depend on your mood as to what you end up writing about. Bad mood – Nasty song, Good mood – Love song

Kane'd Beautiful But Tragic album coverJessica Gilbert: Tell us about your album Beautiful But Tragic and the inspiration behind the title.

Kane’d:
Stacey: The making of this album has been a very long process. We went through a lot of tough times and songs to get to what is now ‘Beautiful But Tragic.’ It wasn’t an easy process recording the songs and then eliminating them. It took a lot of time.
Steph: When we put the songs together for the album, we listened to it thoroughly and thought that ‘Beautiful But Tragic’ really said how our music career has been.
Chez: There have been some amazing points and a lot of down times, and we thought ‘Beautiful But Tragic’ was a perfect way to describe it.

Jessica Gilbert: Who are some musicians you admire and look up to?

Kane’d:
Cheryl: I am hugely inspired by Alter Bridge. I was going through an emotional time during the release of their album Blackbird. Their songs really helped me through. I even got a blackbird tattooed on my back because of it…That’s inspiration! Haha!
Steph: It’s really difficult to choose one as I am inspired by so many different artists and genres for so many reasons. Someone who does inspire me a lot is Shania Twain. She fought hard for what she has achieved and I absolutely love her music. A bit of country rock is all good.
Stacey: We are all inspired by so many people it’s hard to not name them all. One of my inspirations would have to be Pat Benetar. A rock chick with lots of attitude.

Jessica Gilbert: If you had the power to do something in the world today, what would it be and why?

Kane’d: That’s an easy one…We would stop suffering of any kind to any living human, animal or thing. No one should ever have to suffer.

Jessica Gilbert: What is one of your favorite quotes (or lines) that inspires you?

Kane’d:
Steph: “There are only so many knock downs you can have before things have to look up”… The music industry is full of knock backs. All you can do is dust yourself off and throw yourself back in the game
Stacey: “Always look on the bright side of life”… Just love the song in general. If you can’t laugh at yourself then you are leading a very miserable life
Cheryl: “Behind every successful person there is a group of haters”… What they don’t realize is that they inspire me to work harder to get what I want in life
